THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERAN AFFAIRS
The picking of the title for this week’s show is more than just a continuing theme of using great song lyrics as titles for shows, but rather is reflective of my position on the issues that have come to light recently with regard to medical treatment through VA hospitals for our veterans. The way I see it, the last real war we fought was World War II, not only because it was the last time Congress declared war (the only true way we can go to war, constitutionally), but because it also was the last time this country sacrificed something for the war effort. Every conflict since, we’ve asked our youngest men among us to sacrifice in our stead, while we sit safely at home and complain about our taxes.
There are serious issues at several VA hospitals that continue to be ongoing problems. For example, there are accusations that waiting lists have been doctored, that the delay periods could be responsible for hundreds of deaths, that there is at least one death has been attributed to delays in care for our veterans, that these are issues that have been known by this administration (and every administration since Vietnam, honestly), all while the budget for the VA has increased year after year.
President Obama has vowed a “forceful response” to these problems. We will discuss solutions, not just pointing the finger any laying blame. This isn’t a partisan issue. Our country has failed the people that have done what we collectively have been unwilling to do: sacrifice.
GAY MARRIAGE BANS LIFTED BY FEDERAL JUDGES
Gay marriage bans from state legislatures or as amendments to state constitutions have been lifted all over the place. States with pending appeals as a result of the Federal Court strikedowns of gay marriage bans include Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and more. We will discuss the legal consequences of the widespread phenomenon in federal jurisprudence and whether we will see sexual orientation treated as a protected class for purposes of the equal protection clause, or if whom we choose to enter into the contract of marriage with is a private matter that is a part of the right to privacy “emanating from the penumbras” of the bill of rights.
2014 PRIMARY RESULTS
Finally, we will discuss the outcome of a relatively surprising, mostly unsurprising, 2014 primary election on Tuesday, and what we expect moving on to July 22nd run-offs and with the grand full elections in November.
