President Obama announced today that he hopes to propose a plan to Congress to provide for two free years of community college education to every citizen.
In a speech delivered to an audience at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, TN, the President noted that ” the single most important way to get ahead is not just to get a high school education, you’ve got to get some higher education. That’s why all of you are here.”
This proposal is now without scrutiny. Representative John Kline, a Republican from Minnesota, stated “Make no mistake, the president is proposing yet another multi-billion dollar federal program that will compete with existing programs for limited taxpayer dollars.”
Nothing in life is ever free, and my education certainly was not. However, anything that can get the for-profit schools out of the way from exploiting our ambitious youth, and can direct our Federal dollars away from waging war to building communities, is an action I can support.
Congress will work out the particulars, obviously. But this is certainly going to be an important issue as we lead into the first State of the Union to a republican controlled Federal legislature.
