Welcome back to Talking Law, the show where I, a Georgia licensed lawyer and middle Georgia anytime attorney, answer your legal questions.
Today I will discuss the NLRB’s ruling that Northwestern University Athletes qualify to attempt to form the first ever college athletics players’ union. The long-held justification for not paying the players for the millions of dollars made off of the licensing rights to name or likeness rights or for the players’ performances on the field or court, the fact that the students receive college scholarships, justifies their characterization as an employee under the law. As such, they can form a union to negotiate the terms and conditions of their employment.
Also, as I always do with this show, I’ll be answering questions off of avvo.com on civil law suits. Call in at 6:00 p.m. to get your legal questions answered at 478-227-3879.
